In this paper, the ‘Gestation of the Word’ is interpreted as a natural embryonic development taking place within a maternal womb. The ‘growth’ or gestational development of Mina Purefoy’s baby, as well as his eventual birth in the ‘Oxen of the Sun’ episode parallel’s the same cosmic evolution of the incarnation of the Logos. Thus, the medical and purely physical setting of the maternity ward serves as the setting of the divine fiat through which the process of creation was simultaneously initiated and completed. However, the Biblical nativity is savagely parodied through a chaotic recapitulation of the process of evolution (styles of English) which finally produces an abortive ‘demiurge’, incapable of conscious articulation.
