Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the commonest human cancer. Though usually indolent, it may also have an aggressive course, rapidly infiltrating deep structures and, in rare cases, giving rise to metastases [1]. Several studies have sought to identify the risk factors associated with the more aggressive phenotypes. Angiogenesis appears to play a critical role both in initiation and in progression of several solid tumors [2, 3]. We investigated microvessel density (MVD) and the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in 15 biopsy specimens from 11 patients.

Microvessel density and VEGF expression seems to correlate with invasiveness of basal cell carcinoma.

Abstract

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the commonest human cancer. Though usually indolent, it may also have an aggressive course, rapidly infiltrating deep structures and, in rare cases, giving rise to metastases [1]. Several studies have sought to identify the risk factors associated with the more aggressive phenotypes. Angiogenesis appears to play a critical role both in initiation and in progression of several solid tumors [2, 3]. We investigated microvessel density (MVD) and the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in 15 biopsy specimens from 11 patients.
