L'islam nel Mediterraneo. L'incontro con l'Europa, le sfide della modernità

Il volume raccogli alcuni saggi incentrati sul tema dell’incontro tra il mondo islamico e l’Europa nel contesto mediterraneo. Tale incontro si inseriva in un periodo complesso per il mondo musulmano che da una lunga fase di decadenza stava facendo emergere segnali di rinnovamento che da tale incontro furono incoraggiati o, secondo alcune interpretazioni, suscitati. Il volume intende ripercorrere questa fase di rinnovamento dell’islam nel Mediterraneo, occupandosi delle Riforme ottomane in Turchia e in Egitto, del rapporto tra islam e nazionalismo tra Otto e Novecento, delle sfide poste alla civiltà islamica dalla modernità e della sua riposta a tali impulsi, senza dimenticare il problema della coabitazione tra diverse comunità religiose nel Mediterraneo, che rimane essenziale per delineare il futuro di questa regione. The volume contains essays that focus on the theme of the encounter between the Islamic world and Europe in the Mediterranean context. This encounter took place in a complex period for the Muslim world that, from a long period of decline, was offering signs of renewal, that were encouraged by the contacts with Europe, or according to some interpretations, caused by it. The book aims to cover this phase of renewal of Islam in the Mediterranean, taking into consideration the Ottoman reforms in Turkey and Egypt, the relationship between Islam and nationalism in the nineteenth and twentieth century, the challenges posed by modernity to the Islamic civilization and its response to these pulses, not to mention the problem of coexistence between different religious communities in the Mediterranean, which remains essential for shaping the future of this region.
