Type 1 diabetes mellitus is an organ-specific autoimmune disorder which has been described as associated with coeliac disease. Some genetic studies have shown an increased association of these two disorders with HLA aplotypes A1-B8-DQ2, but it is still uncertain if the association is due to this common genetic predisposition or if one disease predisposes to the other. Coeliac disease only occasionally precedes the onset of T1DM; more often coeliac disease tends to develop soon after diabetes is diagnosed. Typical gastrointestinal symptoms of coeliac disease are rare in T1DM patients, while atypical signs and symptoms are common. Routine screening for coeliac disease, using a combination of AGA and EMA, is recommended yearly in diabetic patients from the onset of the disease, in order to detect latent or silent coeliac disease and to prevent its long-term complications. Abstract
