There is a recently growing interest in translational hermeneutics within the field of translation studies. Schleiermacher may be viewed as the founder of modern hermeneutics and as the initiator of the translational hermeneutics. After a short historical overwiew covering Schleiermacher and the disciplinary status of translational hermeneutics the article is focussed on important concepts within the paradigm of translational hermeneutics such as expressed by Fritz Paepcke and Radegundis Stolze. In the 20th century translational hermeneutics received a dramatic development. Both scholars attempted to approach the act of translation systematically from an hermeneutical perspective and to present the results in complex theories. The central theoretical issues that characterize the hermeneutical approach refer to comprehension, translation as a threefold subject oriented process and the individual moment in all language usage. Hermeneutical thinking needs to find its way into the language of a scientific discipline by the integration of research on cognitive processes. In particular, some studies on the process of understanding and translational creativity have reconciled the hermeneutical paradigm with cognitive science.
