Bembo and the philology of vernacular literature (iii) · The third part of this essay investigates the reasons for Bembo was so reticent to publicise his discovery and use of Petrarch’s original manuscript of the Canzonere (now Vat. Lat. 3195) : although Bembo used the manuscript for his Aldine edition of 1501 and even purchased it in 1544, he intentionally refrained from telling the wider scholarly community that it was the original manuscript. This explains why most of his friends and followers (such as Benedetto Varchi, Lodovico Domenichi and Lodovico Beccadelli), with the exception of Girolamo Querini and Carlo Gualteruzzi, were unaware of the existence of the original. Bembo probably made Alessandro Vellutello believe that the Vat. Lat. 3195 was not the original, manipulating and deceiving him. Vellutello only in his last years became hostile to Bembo and to his circle.
