The essay deals with the topic of the congress and discusses the causes that lead to the creation of voids within historic cities. Starting from a recent book by Nicola Gardini, the essay highlights two trends: the urban void can be considered as a bearer of meanings and stories, perhaps more intriguing than the built city; or the void can be seen as an absence that must be restored to ensure the life of the city. Mostly of urban lacunae are not accidental: they are often the result of an express intention. Rebuilding in a void is not easy, however, according to recent Italian laws, both in situations such as after earthquakes (L’Aquila 2009) or in the cities ruled by speculative overbuilding.
