The article analyzes the notion of thing in Heidegger’s Being and Time. Although Heidegger will deepen its potential only from the mid-30s, even making it a pivotal concept of his later thought, that notion plays an important role already in the discourse of fundamental ontology. Far from being a limit, the phenomenological ambivalence of the thing is a crucial resource, which makes it a truly rich and articulated ‘operator’ in Being and Time.

Abstract

The article analyzes the notion of thing in Heidegger’s Being and Time. Although Heidegger will deepen its potential only from the mid-30s, even making it a pivotal concept of his later thought, that notion plays an important role already in the discourse of fundamental ontology. Far from being a limit, the phenomenological ambivalence of the thing is a crucial resource, which makes it a truly rich and articulated ‘operator’ in Being and Time.
