Abstract

Architecture and hospitality strategies in Pescara between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries A phenomenon of great importance on a European scale during the nineteenth century, the fashion of the seaside stay was born and developed initially in the countries facing the North and Baltic seas, to arrive only later along the coasts of the Mediterranean. However, the assimilation process was rapid: favored by the mild climate and the beauty of the landscape, enriched by the intellectual gratification deriving from historical or literary connections, the southern seaside resorts soon equate the northern models to the organizational level, focusing on structures of attraction and leisure to ensure variety and elegance to the tourist offer. In this context, the birth and development of seaside hospitality in Castellammare Adriatico and Pescara were inseparable from the peculiar historical events that characterize the area since the last decades of the nineteenth century; in the aftermath of the proclamation of the new Italian kingdom (March 17th, 1861), in fact, Castellammare and Pescara will experience an interesting development in which a role of absolute importance will be given to the seaside activity and the connected tourist hospitality.
