Czechoslovakia was born in the aftermath of World War I claiming a legitimacy on the ground of the principles of nationality and self-determination. Under the lead of its creators, Tomas Masaryk and Edvard Benes, the First Republic (1918-1938) represented a democratic system respectful of individual rights. However, Czechoslovakia was not able to solve the problems connected to the presence within its borders of a multitude of national components with different aims and expectations.
