Not all low status groups are protected to the same extent by the fairness norm. With the present research study, we aimed to examine (a) to what degree members of two differently protected groups of immigrants living in Italy perceived group discrimination, (b) the attitude that they held towards their own group (vs. Italians), and (c) the relationship between perceived group discrimination and ingroup identification. We expected and found that protection of the immigrant group affects the attitude that immigrants hold towards their own group. Moreover, when discrimination is intensely perceived, members of normative protected groups enhance their identification while members of scantily protected groups reduce it.
