Pavle Solaric o Romejima

This paper presents and analyzes Pavle Solarić’s (1779-1821) positions on Romios, one of the terms used to denote citizens of the Eastern Roman Empire. In his books, that were mostly published in Venice and that are mostly translations of Western European authors, Solarić did not provide information about the Byzantine Empire, a fact which reflects the times in which he lived and worked. It is possible however to read about Greeks, Helenes, and Romios in his manuscript about the origins of the Slavs, Roda slavenskoga početak, razmnoženije, porodi i izrodi (Archive of the SASA, Inv . No. 162. [220]). Here Solarić, among other things, is engaged in an etymological analysis of the origins of the words Greek, Helen, and Romio. The analysis of some fragments, which are not infrequently contradictory and confusing, permits the readers to understand Solarić’s approach to this topic since it reflects the philological mode of his time and the author’s efforts to approach this complex and controversial topic professionally. Намера је да се овим радом изложе и анализирају ставови Павла Соларића о Ромејима. У својим објављеним списима Соларић није оставио података о Византији што је вероватно последица времена у коме је живео. Могуће је прочитати, међутим, о етимолошким анализама имена Грк, Хелен, и Ромеј у његовом рукопису Рода славенскога почетакъ, размноженїе, породе и изроди (Архив САНУ, инв. бр. 162. [220]). Анализом одељака, који су не тако ретко противречни и конфузни, могуће је установити да је Соларићев приступ тематици значајан јер одражава филолошку моду тог времена и ауторову намеру да стручно приђе тако сложеној и контроверзној тематици.
