A remarkable example of Renaissance architecture in Naples, the palace built between 1451 and 1490 by the Como family was demolished in 1881-82 and partly reconstructed at a different site. The façades on two main levels display the accurate stonework fashionable in that period: a regular rustication decreasing in depth from the lower to the upper level, over a smooth basement. This kind of work is to be found in other Neapolitan examples such as the palace of Diomede Carafa, and can be connected to the Tuscan taste brought to the kingdom by Alfonso, Duke of Calabria. A further suggestion comes from the cross-shaped windows of the south and east façades, for which the work of Tuscan stonecutters is recorded. The author’s careful research has produced, among other data, an interesting reference to the famous Dalmatian sculptor Francesco Laurana, whose name appears in a bill of sale to Angelo Como dated 1473.
