Ivo Andrić’s TRAVNIČKA HRONIKA (1945) is based on a very rich corpus of historical materials which of course includes the historical-literary phenomenon of morlachism. The primary reflection of morlachism in Andrić’s text appears in the guise of a young Frenchman Amedée Chaumette Des Fossés, who on his arrival in Travnik in Bosnia, begins research in the field of ethnology and civilization of the Balkans. Just as many Western travelers had done before him (beginning with Alberto Fortis who travelled in Dalmatia in 1771), Des Fossés lives in close contact with the local population. In this sense the episode from chapter 10 is particularly significant since it describes the passion between the young Frenchman Des Fossés and the young Illyrian girl Jelka. Andrić’s narrative offers an original reworking of the not uncommon literary theme involving unhappy girls from the Balkans being seduced by visiting Europeans.
