This paper deals with the Yugoslavian writer Borislav Pekić’s feelings of being an outsider both in his native culture as well as in the culture of England where he lived for many years. Pekić (1930-1992) emigrated to England in the early ‘70s and he remained there for about twenty years. Most of his important work was produced during his stay in the UK. In his collection of the commentaries he wrote for the BBC published as “Letters from abroad” (Pisma iz tuđine) in 1987 as well as in his private correspondence (2002; 2003) a growing sense of the author’s existential malaise clearly emerges. Pekić no longer felt at home in his native country nor did he feel that he truly belonged to his adopted country. He felt that he had become an alien in both places.
