Abstract

A highly important book that discusses how development theory can be improved, while acknowledging the importance of academic data-sharing The political and economic hegemony that underpins the western world's obsession with 'development' has been criticised in recent years. It assumes development is a linear progression, and expects all countries to embark on similar trajectories. Such a view reveals the highly colonial attitudes that are still at play. Until the eighties, Development Theory was ethnocentric, focussed on moulding global cultures until they fit the western model. Now, attempts to deconstruct and reconfigure the damaging rigidity of past development projects are being made, with varying success. This is the story of a lengthy and complex investigation, which proves the need for researchers to have full access to cross-discipline data archives. The free transit of information is key to the growth of the scientific community - as this book succinctly proves. Despite the difficulties involved in the compilation of the research contained within, the researchers involved relished the experience to develop pluralistic means of advancing human knowledge.
