This paper analyzes the entries that relate to monsters and other mythical creatures in the manuscript dictionary of the second half of the eighteenth century which is the work of the German-born Danish official Christian Friedrich Temler (1717-1780). This undated dictionary is kept in The Royal Library of Copenhagen (GKS 2071); it is written in bosančica and in scientific literature (Dobrowsky 1796; Dobrowsky 1814; Svane 1968; Jacobsen 1970; Jacobsen, 1984) is known as the “Dictionarium Slavonicum” but also as “Glossarium illyricum”. The entries in Temler’s dictionary are cited according to azbuka, i.e. to cyrillic script and its analysis is hindered by the fact that Temler created a system of entry articles and organized his work partly as an etymological dictionary. In this paper the entries are compared with the entries referring to monsters and other mythical creatures in the dictionary of Giacomo Micaglia, Thesaurus (1649-51), which was probably used as a model by Temler. Other Croatian dictionaries such as Faust Vrančić’s Dictionarium (1595) and Ardelio della Bella’s Dizionario (1728), as well as Temler’s tractus of 1779 about the traces of the Illyrian and Celtic languages that have been left in the Nordic languages are taken into account.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the entries that relate to monsters and other mythical creatures in the manuscript dictionary of the second half of the eighteenth century which is the work of the German-born Danish official Christian Friedrich Temler (1717-1780).
