The success of a line by Aristophanes (Vesp. 42-45): from the staging to the school- and rhetorical reuse · The reuse of a line from Wasps (vv. 42-45) in a technical handbook from the 3rd century AD (Ps. Hermogenes, De methodo gravitatis) gives an opportunity to review, in the light of rhetorical doctrine, a few of Aristophanes’ favourite forms in the achievement of the comic, as well as to get an insight into the success of the comedy in the schools, with some interesting reflections on the purposes and the ways in which Aristophanes’ text was received and transmitted.
