Drawing from documents recently become available in the Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation (AVP RF), from other Russian and Italian Archives; based also on Russian, Anglo-Saxon and Italian historiography as well as the press of the time, the article aims at suggesting a first reconstruction of the relations and the collaboration between Italy and the Soviet Union in the Twenties, in the field of Aeronautics. An aspect that the two countries had in common was the propaganda use they were able to make of aviation, that became a constituent part of the regimes’ image within the country and abroad. The Eastern Mediterranean crossing, that brought Italo Balbo and his pilots to Odessa, sanctioned a renewed collaboration between the two governments.
