This paper focuses on the role of religious affiliation in the formation of Egyptian national identity at a time when the country experienced the impact of European cultural, political, and military influence. Religion, culture, ethnicity; each of these factors played a role in the search for a communitarian and / or an individual awareness. Coptic and Muslim communities both share a greater horizon of communitarian bonds which go beyond national, linguistic, and ethnic boundaries. In the period considered, however, religious affiliation was pushed into the background for the sake of national independence. Religion was left to the private sphere, while another bond was proposed and became a shared cultural heritage: Egypt to Egyptians. The analysis of Egyptian intellectuals’ thought shows that the movement for Islamic reform played an important role in this process. An oscillation between secularization and religious confessionalism can also be observed.
