Abstract

Coastal territories are by their nature transition spaces, thresholds from which many stories of sailors and travelers began; they are places of departure and landing, crossed to discover and conquer new lands, or to leave by the sea. Migrants are forced to cross these spaces. Italian coastal areas deserve an increased space in territorial policies. These areas are fragile concerning social, economic and environmental crises, at the same time they are strategic in the redistribution of the relations with foreign countries and small towns. The construction and strengthening of a solid network of relationships between coasts andmountains is a necessary precondition for reducing the existing gaps. The identification of places e capable of triggering broad regeneration processes is an obligatory step. The reinterpretation of the relationship with the sea and the construction of a new alliance with nature, aimed at “recovering the landscape” as a connective system, between the coasts and small towns, depressed and largely subjected to depopulation. This new “deal”, in the configuration of recognizable and identifiable “territorial archipelagos”, must be structured on the updating of innovation drivers, passing also through integration and socio-cultural development. What forms of migration are to be considered strategic within a framework of such complexity and dynamism? What are the operational ways to plan and manage them? What can be the urban and territorial materials of the project? What are the scales of intervention? What forms of living can be prefigured? The reflection will try to give useful answers, considering past and ongoing researches and projects carried out in the Middle Adriatic. These experiences recognize the migration as a strategic move for creating a greater balance within different territories, for recovering of the vacant or underutilized heritage for rediscovering the inner Italy.
