The paper tries to clarify the model which explains animal motion in Aristotle’s De anima and De motu animalium. The roles of sense-perception, thought, phantasìa, pleasure, pain, and òrexis are outlined. The author proposes to identify òrexis with the union of pleasure (or pain) to its reference, through phantasìa, to some cause in the environment.

Abstract

The paper tries to clarify the model which explains animal motion in Aristotle’s De anima and De motu animalium.
