The essay aims to reconstruct the succession of German language and literature lecturers at the State University of Milan from the early days of the Scientific-Literary Academy to the 1950s, with a particular focus on the period of rapprochement between the Fascist and National Socialist regimes. Through the study of the trajectories of individual contributors (and their superiors), in combination with an analysis of the curricula, the aim is to focus on how the lectureship – understood as an integrative teaching tool – was the subject of both historical-po- litical controversy and of an academic practice that, over time, led to an increasing awareness of the importance of language teaching. At the same time, however, the lecturer became an increasingly specialized figure with no possibility of a stable integration within the faculty.
