Since 1992, when the international conference ‘Visibile parlare’ was held in Cassino, not much has been published about medieval epigraphy in vernacular and nothing at all about its writing. Following Armando Petrucci’s wish, we attempt the study of the palaeographical features of vernacular inscriptions; in particular, our field of interest is the writing of Italian inscriptions from the ninth to the early fourteenth century, although we take into account contemporary evidence from other linguistic areas, especially France andSpain. Our observations will be based mainly on published material, but we also present so far unpublished inscriptions
