Pescara’s waterfront occupies a central position, with respect to the whole of the Abruzzo coastline, on top of representing a unique in the whole Adriatic coast. It is indeed one of the few towns, if not the only one, with a population in excess of 200.000 inhabitants having such a close proximity of the urban centre and useable beach. This is also due to the morphology of the waterfront itself: uniform in shape, sandy, straight and low, interrupted only by the outlet of the river Pescara, which encompasses the commercial harbour, and the yacht club. A seafront road runs parallel to the beach with a wide sidewalk, lined with palm trees and a bicycle path. The beach resorts are different in stile and materials used, reflecting their construction period. Due to the close proximity of the heart of the town with the seafront, the strong pull for populating the ‘void’ space represented by the sandy shore is almost, physically, felt. From here stems the interest for those strategies tending to the protection and strengthening of the environmental values, always bearing in mind the social-economical issues related to the numerous, over a hundred, tourist enterprises active on the beach front. Those strategies have the objective of re-qualifying the seafront; establishing new levels of integration between the town and the sea; of making the public space on the beach useable outside and beyond the summer season; conceptualising a novel arrangement of the beach to become an integral part of the town, not limiting it’s use just to the summer months; to propose new aggregation centres, encouraging the development of new enterprises exploiting the use of space on the water; identifying a total strategy of spatial relationship for the new landscaping, environmental, social and economical development policies for the seafront; encouraging the use of ‘low impact” materials and technologies promoting environmental friendly development of the urban waterfront; enabling access to the beach and resorts to the citizens with reduced or deprived of, mobility.

Abstract
Those strategies have the objective of re-qualifying the seafront; establishing new levels of integration between the town and the sea; of making the public space on the beach useable outside and beyond the summer season; conceptualising a novel arrangement of the beach to become an integral part of the town, not limiting it’s use just to the summer months; to propose new aggregation centres, encouraging the development of new enterprises exploiting the use of space on the water; identifying a total strategy of spatial relationship for the new landscaping, environmental, social and economical development policies for the seafront; encouraging the use of ‘low impact” materials and technologies promoting environmental friendly development of the urban waterfront; enabling access to the beach and resorts to the citizens with reduced or deprived of, mobility.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
