Abstract

Rural habitat usually constitutes a particularly vulnerable heritage, because of the constant risk of alienation or contamination. This risk comes from the progressive neglect (caused by the changed conditions of the agricultural activity, and of the continuous modifications) and also from substitutions allowed by the absence or deficiency of any protective and safeguarding measure. In the territory of Abruzzo, there is a rural habitat characterised from “raw-earth houses ”. These represent not only the memory of an autochthonous rural character but, above all, they can be considered like “archetypes” of an appropriate and ecological building. Indeed, they are the result of choices that are connected to the local resources and to the material culture, suggesting optimisation of forms, structures and use of materials in particular climatic and technical conditions. The region of Abruzzo emanated specific laws facing the protection and the valorisation of raw-earth architectural patrimony that, however, now are devoid of technical regulations and, therefore, are difficult to actuate. The region has also planned the support to projects of rural dwellings rehabilitation to tourist-receptive aims. The purpose is to encourage the contracting development by increasing a part of the territory value, as a valid alternative to the coastal congestion, with tourist forms directed to new targets of requests. On these assumptions and with these programmatic purposes is based the proposal of a project aimed to protect and improve, through innovative interventions of re-qualification, this peculiar rural habitat. The project is interdisciplinary and is defined by a series of strategic actions that actualise the safeguard of the existent
