Maintenance as strategy for sustainable urban development recalls many questions among which also ecological problems. Maintenance policies, for constructions built by employing appropriate technologies, take on a central role either for the urbanised context "conservation" or for the natural environment "defence". These problems interest, in a very strong way, the seaboard of Abruzzo, characterised by the presence of ancient wood structures, definable artificial and also "natural" elements: the trabocchi, buildings coming from the auto-construction tradition, made with the materials of the site. In the last years, trabocchi have been counted in a census, catalogued and plotted. At the same time, the Authority of Abruzzo Region has given specific rules, which have not caused positive effects because not sufficiently complete and binding. With the aim of warranting the "survival" of those anthropological signs and of re-proposing their constructive logic for new buildings, it has been developed a study, whose results are specific indications and rules for rehabilitation planning. These results foresee a maintenance strategy aiming to promote the "prevention" and to hinder the request of emergency interventions.
