In the light of minority languages revitalization trend spread throughout Europe, and encouraged by International and European legislation, at the end of last century Italian law 482/1999 Regulations regarding the protection of historic language minorities was approved, giving a national framework to minority language preservation and renaissance. The status and prestige of minority languages thus appeared to be strengthened, though several theoretical and practical problems continue to impede the national law enforcement. The purpose of this paper is to weigh Italian language politics in the balance, analysing light and shade of the law through case studies representative of Italian sociolinguistic diversity.
