This paper presents new evidence on the effects of attendance on academic performance. We analyse data collected for an Introductory Econometrics Course at the Faculty of Social and Economics Sciences of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, matched with administrative data. Using proxy and instrumental variables to control for unobservable student characteristics potentially correlated with attendance, such as ability, effort and motivation, we find a significant although small effect of attendance on academic performance
