“L’Italia cerca casa / Housing Italy”. Italian Pavilion, Venice, Tese delle Vergini all’Arsenale. La Biennale di Venezia. 11° International Architecture Exhibition, 14 september – 23 november 2008. Curator: Francesco Garofalo. In 2008 Francesco Garofalo was chosen as Curator of the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 11th International Architecture Exhibition. For the first time this choice was the result of a public competitive process. The Ministry of Culture invited five practicing architects to present a proposal for the exhibition, among which Garofalo’s project on housing was eventually selected. The output consists of a complex series of integrated parts. Here the main published item – the catalogue - is offered as a sample of the work. The exhibition involved: - a preliminary research conducted by an interdisciplinary team assembled and directed by Francesco Garofalo; - an exhibition of project by 12 invited Italian architects, curated by Francesco Garofalo; - an installation entitled “Atlante. Casa collettiva e abitare moderno 1930-1980”, composed by 800 images on a 70 m2 long wall; - a 7 minutes long video entitled “Dalla Casa all’Abitare”, still visible at the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY6K4t02WXo which has won several awards; - a complete communication package (posters, invitations, flyers, dvd etc.); - a 8 pages “newspaper” and a four pages directory distributed to the visitors to complement the exhibition (not included in the pdf); - a 200 pages catalogue in Italian and English edited by Francesco Garofalo and published by Electa, Milan (pdf attached). The exhibition was accompanied by numerous public events, including a book launch for the catalogue in Rome, at the Ara Pacis Museum, and over 10 presentations held at universities and public institutions in the year 2009. The purpose of the exhibition was to examine critically the past and present condition of Housing culture and politics in Italy, and to suggest a number of new solutions and projects.
