Through a broad chronicle of the history of the Italian unitary state in the 150th year since its birth, this paper highlights the existing correspondences and correlations between the various weltanschauungen of Italy’s role through the years and its long-period economic growth towards European standards, as well as the recently-appearing risk factors of economic regression from these standards. Through an in-depth analysis of the historical contexts and dynamics, a brand new virtuous weltanschauung can be proposed, based on an innovative federalistic project, rejuvenating both democratic life in the “information society” and the economic system in the new, globalised economy of knowledge.
