The version of the apologue of Heracles at the crossroads reported by Xenophon in his Memorabilia contains elements of the antidemocratic propaganda of the second half of the fifth century. In particular, it features the notion of ponos, whose elitist character and function in the procedure of the selection of the ruling class are affirmed. For these reasons, the context of reference, reception and re-elaboration of Prodicus' epideixis on the 'Choice of Heracles' could not be that to which Socrates ironically refers when he talks of 'one-drachma lesson'.

Abstract

The version of the apologue of Heracles at the crossroads reported by Xenophon in his Memorabilia contains elements of the antidemocratic propaganda of the second half of the fifth century. In particular, it features the notion of ponos, whose elitist character and function in the procedure of the selection of the ruling class are affirmed. For these reasons, the context of reference, reception and re-elaboration of Prodicus' epideixis on the 'Choice of Heracles' could not be that to which Socrates ironically refers when he talks of 'one-drachma lesson'.
