The corpus of 12th-century manuscripts containing texts in French and Occitan reveals several examples of miscellaneous manuscripts, the most interesting of which are bilingual Latin-French miscellanies preserving texts of a scientific / didactic nature. In such texts the vernacular habitually appears in a close typological relationship with the Latin, and in two of the manuscripts examined here Marbod’s De lapidibus is actually accompanied by its French translation. One possible explanation is that such texts formed part of a documentary substructure underpinning the plurilinguistic culture of 12th-century England, where the imported Romance vernacular functioned as a complement rather than as an alternative to Latin.
