Varro used cretic tetrameters in Menippean satires. In these verses the second and eighth syllables can be long, as also in Ennius and Plautus; all cretics can be solved into paeons, as in Greek comic poets such as AristophanesFrr. 387-393 (not fr. 385) Bücheler, from 'Parmeno’, are cretic acatalectic tetrameters katà stíchon, as well as frr. 170 and 466f. Frg. 577 (incertae sedis) is perhaps prose.
