The calculation of settlement is often conditional on the dimensioning of shallow footings. In loose soils, particularly in sandy deposits, the impossibility of collecting undisturbed samples has led to define a set of formulas for calculating the settlements on the basis of in-situ measures. Moreover, the inherent variability of the mechanical properties of the soil as well as model errors in provided formulas for calculating settlements require new procedures for assessing the reliability of calculated settlements on this type of soils. A statistical analysis on nine formulas commonly used for calculating the settlements on sandy soils has been carried out in this paper. The calculations of the settlements have been compared with the values of the field test settlement measures by Burland & Burbidge (1985) and their accuracy, precision and entropy have been investigated. Besides, probabilistic charts of acceptable settlements have been designed by means of the most precise and accurate formula for settlement resulting from this study.
