Abstract
The self-assembly of surfactants in ionic liquids can be modulated by changing the cation or the anion of the solvent [1,2,3] to control the size, the stability and the morphology of the aggregates. The effect of the water-miscible BMIMBF4 and the water-immiscible BMIMPF6 and BMIMTf2N on the aggregation behaviour of the triblock Pluronic L121 [(PEO)5-(PPO)68-(PEO)5] have been determined by using NIR spectroscopy. The critical aggregation concentration of L121 has been measured at 25°C and compared to the data obtained in deuterated water. The formation of supramolecular structures has been confirmed by optical microscopy. Fluorescent vesicles can be observed after the incorporation of Nile Red into the polymeric bilayer or by linking fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) to the copolymer structure [4]. The investigation of the aggregation properties of block copolymers in ILs can contribute to improve the promising activity of polymeric vesicles as carrier systems in nonpolar media.
