Today's society and culture pose problems essentially new. It requires the specific contribution of Pedagogy, as a social science, such as philosophy of education, such as social technology, and as social and intellectual superior profession first of all. In Italy we have a serious delay in this sense than in advanced countries, and the causes of this delay are historically known: on these historical causes we recapitulate some fundamental aspects. We must rediscover the 2500 years of its glorious history, particularly the history of Sozialpädagogik, born in Central Europe in the mid-nineteenth century. It was the basis for the profession of Pedagogist, such as other sciences born in the same period and in the same context, e.g. psychology and, to some extent, sociology. This early history and this late story offer conceptual and operational tools that can be used even today by apical pedagogical professionals, the Pedagogists. They are professional e of the helping relationship, whose characteristic verb is "to care". Finally, take a look at some regulatory problems involved.
