In this paper the phases of thought of the Italian journalist and politician Pacifico Valussi (1813-1893) regarding the Southern Slavs are presented and analyzed. Valussi, as one of the closest associates of Niccolò Tommaseo and a follower of Giuseppe Mazzini, showed great interest towards the Illyrians and their fate, especially with regard to the political future of Italy. The paper demonstrates how Valussi’s theses follow a real historical antinomy through three stages of thought about the Southern Slavs (1836-1860; 1861-1864; 1867-1889); these three stages are, moreover, parte of a broader framework of considerations about the Eastern Question and Eastern border issues regarding the Slavs. Valussi began as an outspoken antiannexationist and eventually developed a program of national defense and of Italian economic activities in relation to the Southern Slavs.

Abstract
Valussi began as an outspoken antiannexationist and eventually developed a program of national defense and of Italian economic activities in relation to the Southern Slavs.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
