Corruption is a widely known crime, since ancient times. It is commonly regarded as one of the most serious offences against public administration, and it has been condemned and prosecuted through time in different ways. The term “corruption”, according to the Italian Digesto, comes from the Latin verb corrumpo, meaning to damage, to rot, to undo and, figuratively speaking, to deprave. The Digesto also says that the fundamental concept of corruption stemmed from Greek legislation. The corruption of a public officer in the detriment of a private citizen was punished by death penalty, pecuniary payment or by “civic degradation”. Of course the latter was administered according to the gravity of the case.
