NĀṢĪF AL-YĀZIJĪ, SYRIAN SCHOLAR AND INTELLECTUAL. HIS FORTUNES IN THE EAST AND WEST AT THE BEGINNING OF THE NAHDAH

This paper intends to start from a historical approach and consider the relationship between Nāṡīf al-Yāzijī with the European and the Oriental culture, through the relations that he entertained in the course of his life as a scholar and intellectual. The paper is divided into three parts. In the first part, it is analyzed the contribution of Nāṡīf al-Yāzijī as a writer and Arabist. The second part fucuses on his relations with the Syrian Protestant College and his collaboration in the Arabic translation of the Bible. In the last part, the various opinions proposed by the scholars regarding the political judgment to be given to the work of Nāṡīf al-Yāzijī are discussed.
