This work discusses the idea of pedagogical and cultural reflection of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the problem of the “best education” of man. The pedagogical utopia provides terrain for an investigation, which highlights the richness and complexity of Rousseau's system, underlining the original nature of educational project and the way to theorize the question of man in his “zero degree”. Three pedagogies of Rousseau and the importance of his contribution for the whole of twentieth-century thought are traced through reference to his works, considering the apparent incoherence and the dialogue between pedagogical and political dimensions. With and after Rousseau, pedagogy changed its face, taking on the contours of a more rigorous and careful reflection, more restless and more critical, more centered on the child and the role of educator.
