The paper examines some of the interpretations of the Italian neo-idealism that are the background to the development of the meaningful theoretic proposals elaborated in the last decades. The first investigated proposal has been developed by thinkers that refer to the Croce's absolute historicism interpreting it as "philosophy of complexity". The second proposal brings out the modernity of the Croce’s reflections on useful and vitality, meant as the "other" and the "unclear", within a theoretical question, as the one outlined by G. Sasso, who, focusing on the question of the "motor of dialectic", shows off a deep Gentilian soul. The third proposal is the criticalproblematical historicism of F. Tessitore, who reads the Italian neoidealism as a "research of historicism", in other words as a struggle between idealism and historicism (a struggle that Croce fights inside himself). The fourth proposal, shared by the author of the paper, is meant to outline a sort of 'realistic idealism’, and reads the neo-idealism as a " ‘reactionary’ reform" born by the "return to Kant", but also aims to value its contemporary elements.
