Parental psychopathology and child maltreatment. Children of parents with mental illness are at risk for multiple negative outcomes, including child maltreatment. The purpose of this paper was to illustrate effects of psychiatric disorders on parenting and the relationship between parental mental illness and child maltreatment. We examinated several studies that investigated factors associated with both the continuation and discontinuation of the intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment. Furthermore, the examination of international experiences suggest, in our country, an urgent need to develop appropriate coordination between mental health systems and child welfare systems in order to promote the mental health of children and their protection.

Abstract
Parental psychopathology and child maltreatment. Children of parents with mental illness are at risk for multiple negative outcomes, including child maltreatment. The purpose of this paper was to illustrate effects of psychiatric disorders on parenting and the relationship between parental mental illness and child maltreatment. We examinated several studies that investigated factors associated with both the continuation and discontinuation of the intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment. Furthermore, the examination of international experiences suggest, in our country, an urgent need to develop appropriate coordination between mental health systems and child welfare systems in order to promote the mental health of children and their protection.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
