The history of the practice of sport and its educational purposes in Italian schools between the late 19th and the early 20th centuries is reconstructed through the particular case of the gymnastics teacher and educational equipment producer Giuseppe Pezzarossa, whose activities are analyzed through the interpretive lens of material history of education, and in particular of the newly coined category of «mass educational means».
