HEINRICH STIEGLITZ, TRIESTINE CULTURAL CIRCLE AND SOUTHERN SLAVS: This Triestine cultural circle, active on the Trieste-Venice route in the 19th century, was an intercultural expression of the cooperation between the Italians, the Germans and the Slavs, aimed at bringing about the collapse of the Austrian monarchy and the creation of new states. To this end, the tradition and the history of the Southern Slavs was of fundamental importance; this historical narrative and poetry was very attractive to these intellectuals who saw, primarily in Serbian folk poems, a symbol of the struggle against foreign domination. In particular, the relationship between Pacifico Valussi, Heinrich Stieglitz, Niccolò Tommaseo, Francesco Dall’Ongaro and many others – all thrilled by Serbia and Serbian oral tradition – acquainted the Italian audience with Slavic poetry and history. It is evident from their activity that this cultural circle nurtured great hope in the German poet whom Tommaseo expected to forge connections between the Germanic and the Slavic worlds, all within the wider concept of fraternization among peoples.
