The essay traces the life and work of Robert Hertz, a scholar of the School of French sociology and anthropology lead by Durkheim and Mauss, and focuses in particular on a vast and ambitious work, which remained unfinished, Le péché et l'expiation dans les sociétés primitives (1922). In considering the intertwining of life and works and the understanding of the questions that the young scholar was able to ask, it is possible to identify a line of reflection that concerns the foundation of anthropological and sociological sciences. The theme of time, in particular, stands out as the key to understanding a radical anthropology that still has much to tell us.
