« Le sens de la lutte ». La Breve storia della letteratura tedesca de György Lukács en Italie (1945-1958)

In 1945 Georg Lukács’ Sketch of a History of Recent German Literature initiated a renewal of literary historiography based on a Marxist aesthetic. Its Italian translation, made by the Germanist Cesare Cases and issued by the publisher Giulio Einaudi in 1956, is considered here as a position-taking in the Italian literary field, in particular in the debate on realism and the revision of the national literary canon. According to Bourdieu’s sociological approach the investigation is focused on the operations of “selecting”, “labelling” and “reading” that took place within the publishing house, and involved a number of intellectuals near to the Italian Communist Party, such as Cesare Pavese, Delio Cantimori, Antonio Giolitti and Renato Solmi. It thus shows the collective work and the “sense of struggle” that are necessary in order to make a foreign text exist in a new context. [En 1945, la parution de l’ouvrage Breve storia della letteratura tedesca dal settecento a oggi de György Lukács marque un renouveau de l’historiographie de la littérature – non seulement allemande – à partir de l’esthétique marxiste. Sa traduction en italien, réalisée par le germaniste Cesare Cases et publiée par la maison d’édition Einaudi en 1956, sera ici étudiée comme une prise de position dans le champ littéraire italien, et notamment dans le débat sur le réalisme et sur le canon littéraire national. À l’aide d’outils d’analyse développés par Pierre Bourdieu, nous allons reconstituer les opérations de « sélection », « marquage » et « lecture » qui s’effectuent au sein de la maison d’édition, avec la participation de différents intellectuels liés au Parti communiste italien, dont Cesare Pavese, Delio Cantimori, Antonio Giolitti et Renato Solmi. Se dessinent ainsi le travail collectif et le « sens de la lutte » qui sont nécessaires pour faire exister une œuvre étrangère dans un contexte nouveau.]
