Abstract

On the concept of ‘destiny’. Lexical innovations in the Slavic works of Maksim the Greek The biography of Michele Trivolis, together with his fervent activity as a translator, suggests that in his works we may find a particular usage of the lexicon: use of traditional lemmas in new and/or different meanings, introduction of new terms. The paper offers the analysis of the use of three words, borrowed from Greek and Latin and connected with the concept of ‘destiny’, that Maksim the Greek introduces in his works against astrology: имармения, фатунъ, фортуна. To better appreciate the peculiar properties of Maksim the Greek’s lexical use, the results of the survey will be compared with the previous use and semantics of the words, on the basis of the historical section of Russian National Corpus.
