Abstract

The study of Western education and athleticism requires an investigation aimed at reconstructing the origin of a specific anthropological and cultural vision that has determined, or at least deeply influenced, the characteristics of Western educational processes, the logical premises of the science of education, the vision of knowledge, of the universe as a mechanical system, of the human being as an all- logic and all-reason being. Homeric education is an introductory chapter of the history of western education and athleticism from which to begin a reflection in the context of the promotion of a sports pedagogy that responds to the real needs of human being's education. The article explores the recurring terminology in the Homeric texts about body, soul, and mind concerning the archaic human being's educational process. This article aims to understand the Greek paideia's conceptual and value framework and search for the roots of the idea and practice of education (and sports education) of a logical-rationalistic kind to overcome them.
