The present paper reports the various pandemics the world has undergone since before Christ, and especially during the past years. A specific classification of the various infectious diseases was executed based on their location in the human body, like all infectious fevers and skin diseases, infections involving the digestive and the respiratory systems, including the COVID-19 pandemic. An accurate differentiation between the terms very frequently used to address the social and medical phenomena that have occurred worldwide such as outbreak, endemic, pandemic was carried out. Although these terms are often used interchangeably, actually, they imply deeply diverse concepts. A special debate was given to the Latin and Latinized names of the bacteria and viruses. While on the other hand, attention was paid to the terms and social phenomena related to COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, the current COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the adoption of numerous loan words from the English language; the mechanism of using words from other languages has been studied Some of the anglicisms that have been most often utilized were defined, analyzed and highlighted.
